What about my dress after the wedding day?
Virginal white or a shade similar, choosing your wedding dress is one of the most important, and exciting, aspects of planning a wedding.
But when the sun has set on your big day and it is all over, what do you do with your beautiful investment.
Firstly make sure you have organised either your mother or chief bridesmaid to collect your dress from where you spent your wedding night and drop it off at a reputable drycleaners, even if its fate is still undecided.
Whether you decide to sell it, or keep it, remember the fresher the stain the easier it is to get out.
Even if you can not see those white wine spills on the morning after your wedding, by the time you get back from your honeymoon, the tell-tale marks will show.
If possible, tell your volunteer what you think caused the stain, mud, chocolate, make-up etc, so she can tell the drycleaner and it can be treated accordingly.
Never try to sponge stains yourself.
It doesn't help if the mark has been rubbed vigorously by someone armed with a tea towel and white wine vinegar, as this is an old wive's tale.
Some brides like to keep there wedding dresses either for their daughter to wear (even though this is unlikely as the fashions change so much), to made into a christening gown, or pieces of it used to be tied around their daughters bouquets, as something old.
All of these are good reasons to get the dress cleaned and stored correctly.
Store your dress in pH-neutral (acid and alkaline-free) tissue, ideally in an acid free box.
If you don't get a chance to box it immediately, at least take it out of the drycleaners wrapping, air it for a day, then cover it with a white or cream duvet cover tied at the top, and keeping a dark dry place.
Don't risk storing it in a coloured duvet cover as some fabrics absorb strong colours.
If you do decide to part with your beautiful dress and let some other lucky bride wear it, try to sell it straight away or as soon as possible.
It may become last season's style, so remember how important it was to you to look unforgettable and list your dress on a web site or similar as soon as you can.
It may seem over-the-top to be making plans for what may happen to your wedding dress after the event, but when you have spent months choosing it, also it is probably the most expensive dress you may ever own, it is comforting to know it is safely stored away.
